Chapter Thirteen
âWeâre here!â I announce overly excited. Trying to brush off the slightly damper mood Macs question brought with it. I shut off the engine and turn in my seat to face her.
âI donât exactly know when Iâm leaving. I do have a whole life there. But I know that this...â I grab her hand and look her in the eyes. âIs making it really hard to think about leaving to go back to it.â
A glimmer of hope emerges in her eyes, she leans forward gently grasping the back of my neck pulling me forward to her. She nuzzles her nose on my cheek as I breathe her scent in, savoring it for eternity. How can two people whoâve known each other for most of their lives go from enemies to this in one night?
Leaning in further I press my lips to hers, soft and gentle. Kissing anyone before her has never felt this soft, this special.
âSpeaking of going back to your life, this is crazy but I want to show you something.â Mac says, still close to my face, running her hand through the strands of my hair that have fallen forward.
âOh? What is it?â I ask, genuinely curious.
âYouâll just have to wait and see.â
âOkay, but I have to pick that thing up at ten.â
âYou wonât be late, don't worry.â
She leads me across the street to her bookstore. Oh my god am I finally going to get to see the inside? Even when I was still âhatingâ her I was proud of her accomplishment, and really excited to see it.
âWatch your step, I havenât had a chance to shovel and salt these stairs yet.â
âStairs? Why arenât we going in the front door?â I ask, confused.
âYou didnât think I was going to let you see the store unfinished did you? Just because I slept with you doesn't give you special treatment.â She says as she takes my hand, leading me up a set of back stairs.
âTada!â She says as she pushes open the door. It's an empty but beautiful open space with large windows, original brick walls, and old hardwoods. I look at her, obviously confused.
âOkay, hear me out because this is certifiably crazyâ¦â She says, drawing out her sentence.
My eyes must look as big as they feel because she steps towards me, kisses my cheek, and then steps to the middle of the room spinning a slow circle with her arms out.
âI know that you and I have a past and a history, this isnât new. But we possibly being a thing, well figuring it out anyways is new. I don't want you to think what I'm about to say is because of last night. Because Iâve been pondering this for a while.â
I start to interrupt her but she shushes me, respectfully. âAnna, please just let me say this.â
I nod and zip my lips, she chuckles for a moment and gets right back into her spiel.
âSo I own the whole building and the bookstore only needs the first floor of this place.
